Tyrus Ward Named New Rams Head Coach

After five seasons at his Alma mater Brainerd, Tyrus has been named the new head coach at Tyner.

Ward, 35, replaces Tyner legendary coach Wayne Turner who resigned after three decades and has since been hired as the linebackers’ coach at East Hamilton.

“I’m extremely excited about this great opportunity because of the great success and tradition they have had, and I do not take that lightly,” Ward said.

“I want to add to their past successes and make the program top notch again.”

Tyner will be Ward’s third head coaching gig as he got his first head coaching job at Whites Creek before coming home to take over at Brainerd.

Ward led the Whites Creek program for two seasons going 6-14 in those two seasons before coming home to Brainerd in 2017.

In his four seasons at Brainerd, Ward finished with a 15-30 record, but the Panthers made two Class 3A playoff appearances (2018 and 2020).

The Panthers finished 8-5 in 2020 and beat Smith County for the school’s first playoff win since 2011 and Brainerd improved seven games from 2019 going from 1-9 to 8-5.

Before taking the Whites Creek job, Ward was an assistant coach at Brainerd for five years (2010-14) and started as an assistant coach at Red Bank in 2009.

Ward replaces Turner who posted a 230-124 record in 30 seasons at Tyner and made the Rams a force statewide.

The Rams won the Class 3A state title in 1997 and finished runner up in 1996 in 3A and 2017 in 2A.

The Rams lost in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs and the Rams finished the season with a 4-5 record this season.

Tyner made the playoffs 27 of Turner’s 30 years at Tyner (1992, 1994, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, 2013, 2015, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2020).

Tyner also won 15 region titles under Turner as well (1996, 1997, 1998, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2017, 2018 and 2019).

His overall coaching record is 234-140 as he was the head coach at Kirkman in 1989 and 1990 before the school shut its doors.

Currently eight schools in Brainerd, Cumberland Gap, Grainger, Jackson Central Merry, Lakeway Christian, Northwest, Ooltewah, and Sycamore are looking for a head coach.
