After just one season, Travis Olinger is out as the head football coach at Whitwell.
“I had a meeting with the principal and she said I had been fired as head football coach, I did not step down,” Olinger said.
An email and text message sent to Whitwell Principal Teena Casseday seeking comment has not been returned.
The Tigers finished the 2018 season as the Class 1A state champions as they capped off an undefeated season by beating Cornersville for the school’s first football state title.
But the 2019 season was a rebuilding season as the Tigers finished just 3-9 but did make the second round of the Class 1A playoffs.
The Tigers upset then undefeated Monterey (10-1) 21-7 in the first round of the playoffs before bowing out to Gordonsville in the second round.
Before taking the Whitwell job, Olinger served as the defensive line coach for the Tigers in 2018 and then previously coached 12 years (2006-17) at East Ridge his Alma mater.
Currently there are 12 schools looking for a head coach they are: Dickson County, Fairley, Fayette Academy, First Assembly Christian, Harding Academy, Hickman County, Silverdale, Tipton Rosemark, Union City, Whites Creek, Whitwell and York Institute
