Puckett Hired at Shelbyville

Josh Puckett led Lake County to an undefeated season and the school’s first football state title since 1985.

Now Puckett will try and have the same success at Shelbyville, as he has been named the Golden Eagles new head football coach.

“We interviewed several qualified candidates and Josh stood out. Yes, winning a state championship was a great selling point for Coach Puckett and  his overall responses in our interview and his presentation were on target in what we were looking for in a head football coach. Other than having a strong foundation in the X’s and O’s, Coach Puckett has a genuine personality and I believe our players will respond well to that.  We look forward to him joining the SCHS family,” Shelbyville principal Tim Harwell said.

Puckett, 36, replaces Justin Palmer who was fired last month after leading Shelbyville to a 11-2 record and a Quarterfinal trip to the Class 5A playoffs this season.

Under Palmer, the Golden Eagles posted a 33-14 record and made four consecutive Class 5A playoff appearances.

“I wasn’t looking to leave Lake County, it has been a great seven years here and I am honored to be the head coach here,” Puckett said. “The Shelbyville job really intrigued me and after I did some research on it, I think it’s a spot where you can have a lot of success.”

“The fact that I can also bring some coaches with me was also a big plus in my book.”

Puckett led Lake County to a 61-26 overall record and five 1A playoff appearances (2013, 2014, 2017, 2018 and 2019) in his seven seasons in Tiptonville.

After back to back 5-5 seasons in 2015 and 2016, the Falcons were 38-5 with back to back 1A Semifinal trips in 2017 and 2018 and Lake County defeated Greenback 38-23 to win the 1A state title this season.

Puckett started his coaching career at Cheatham County and was also an assistant coach at East Robertson, Obion County, Haywood and Jackson Central Merry before landing the Lake County job.

Currently there are six schools  looking for a head coach they are: East Nashville, Fairley, Fayette Ware, Lake County, Whites Creek and Whitwell
