After being on the football staff for a decade, Rusty Brewer will take over the Polk County football program.
Brewer joined the Wildcat football staff in 2009 and has been the offensive coordinator for the last six years but now will be the head coach.
He replaces Derrick Davis who resigned last month after being the head coach the last 19 years.
“I am excited about the opportunity to lead the program but understand there are big shoes to fill. Polk County football has a tradition of success and our focus is to maintain that tradition. I have been fortunate to be a part of the staff the last 10 years, so the transition will not be a drastic “all new” look for the players,” Brewer said.
Davis, a 1990 graduate of Polk County, led the Wildcat program to a record of 123-88 in his 19 seasons.
He led the Wildcats to 15 playoff appearances in two different classifications (2A in 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004, 2017 and 2018, 3A in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012 and 2013).
Polk County made the playoffs 13 consecutive seasons from 2002 until 2013.
The Wildcats are coming off a 6-5 season in which they lost to Westmoreland in the first round of the Class 2A playoffs.
“In any program we are looking for leadership and I believe we have nine upcoming seniors, many of them with lots of game experience, that are committed and willing to do what it takes to be successful.”
Brewer came to Polk County originally as the head boys basketball coach back in 2007 and two years later joined the football staff.
He started his football coaching career back in 2000 and spent four years (2000-03) at Temple (GA) high school before spending one year at Bradley Central (2004).
He also spent two years (2005-06) at Southeast Whitfield (GA) before coming to Polk County.
There are currently 17 programs looking for a head coach they are: Antioch, Bolton, Collierville, East Hamilton, East Hickman, East Robertson, Greeneville, Halls, Hamilton, Hillcrest, Hillwood, Nashville Overton, Northeast, Northpoint Christian, Tellico Plains, Trousdale County and Waverly
