It was difficult to predict who would come out on top of the 2A title game between the Peabody Golden Tide and the Trousdale County Yellowjackets. Both teams are physical, well disciplined units with athletes capable of making homerun plays. The game didn’t disappoint as Peabody topped Trousdale County 17-9 with the help of a late goal line stand in the most entertaining game of the day.
Peabody opened the scoring late in the first quarter with an Isaiah Hicks 29 yard field goal after a long drive stalled at the Yellowjacket 12 yard line. Trousdale County responded on their next drive with a 5 yard rushing touchdown from QB Keyvont Baines that followed an electric 65 yard rush down the sidelines by Dyson Satterfield. The two teams traded punts on their next few possessions. Golden Tide QB Cooper Baugus broke free for a 38 yard touchdown scramble midway through the second quarter to put Peabody up 10-7. That score would hold until the half came to a close.
In addition to his running ability, Baugus can also throw a pretty ball and he delivered a strike to WR Noah Halbrook in the third quarter. The Golden Tide took the 17-7 lead on Halbrook’s great 51 yard touchdown reception over a Trousdale County defender at the pylon. The Trousdale County offense was hampered in the second half by an injury to QB Keyvont Baines. Baines stayed in the game but his arm/shoulder area was clearly bothering him. However, the Yellowjackets still found a way to drive inside the Peabody 10 yard line on their next possession. The Peabody defense bowed up though and Trousdale failed a 4th down attempt from the 9 yard line.
Trousdale County stopped Peabody on defense and then drove inside the Golden Tide 20 yard line again before a fumble ended the threat. The Yellowjackets were in a dire position now with the 4th quarter clock counting down but their defense got them right back in the game. Peabody had been backed up to their own goal line by penalties when Baugus dropped back to pass. Trousdale defender Matthew Hawkins came off the edge on a blitz and immediately knocked into Baugus before his Yellowjacket teammate Jake Gregory finished off the sack for the safety. Trousdale County now only trailed 17-9 and would be receiving the free kick that followed the safety.
Trousdale County mounted one more attack into Peabody territory behind the rushing of Jayden Hicks who had been inserted as a Wildcat QB. The Yellowjackets this time found themselves with 1st and goal from the Peabody 7 yard line with a chance to score and attempt a two point conversion to tie the game. Trousdale was only able to gain one yard on the first three downs and were faced with a 4th and goal from the six yard line. Keyvont Baines was back in the game for Trousdale County and dropped back to pass. He was immediately under pressure as Golden Tide defenders Marquavious Parks and Jarel Dickson broke through the line. Baines scrambled away momentarily but was eventually brought down for a huge sack that ended the drive. Peabody was able to run out the clock after taking over possession to hold on and win the 2A state title by a score of 17-9.
