Steve Haywood will go from coordinating a state championship offense at CPA to leading another Lions football program that is heading into Division II for the first time.
Haywood who has served at CPA for the last decade was announced as the new head football coach at Lakeway Christian this afternoon.
“We are so excited to introduce Coach Haywood to the Lakeway Christian Schools Community,
Lakeway Christian Executive Director Bob Brown said. “He comes highly recommended from many sources and we feel very confident that he is the right person to continue building the Lions football program.”
Haywood has coached both the offensive line and been the offensive coordinator during his tenure at CPA.
He replaces Jermel Jones who resigned after one season at Lakeway Christian as the Lions finished 0-5 this season, which was their second varsity season.
Jones was named the new head football coach at Lyman (FL) high school last month.
The Lions will move into Division II-A East Region in 2021 as they will join Friendship Christian, Grace Baptist, Middle Tennessee Christian, The King’s Academy and The Webb School in the new region.
Haywood has plenty of state title game experience as in his decade at CPA (2011-20), the Lions have won three state titles (2014 in 3A, 2018 and 2020 in Division II-AA) and finished runner up three times as well (2013 in 3A, 2015 and 2019 in Division II-AA).
The Lions (11-1) beat Lipscomb Academy 35-28 in the Division II-AA title game this season.
Before coming to CPA, Haywood spent 16 seasons at the colligate level as the offensive line coach at Austin Peay for 16 seasons (1997-2010).
Currently eight schools in Brainerd, Cumberland Gap, Grainger, Grundy County, Jackson Central Merry, Northwest, Ooltewah and South Pittsburg are looking for a head coach.
