Grundy County football program placed on two years probation for violating Recruiting Rule

Grundy County’s football program will serve two years probation for breaking the TSSAA’s recruiting rule (Article II, Section 17 of the TSSAA Bylaws).

Grundy County head coach Tracy Hayworth and Offensive Coordinator Nick Meeks have both been suspended for two games apiece with Hayworth serving his suspension on August 30 game against South Pittsburg and September 9 against York Institute both are home games for the Yellow Jackets.

Meeks will serve his suspension back to back weeks of September 13 (vs. Bledsoe County) and September 20 (at DeKalb County).

The violation occurred on July 20 when two student athletes from Sequatchie County came to and were allowed into the Grundy County locker room while coaches were present. The players entered the facility accompanied by Grundy County players and posed for pictures and videos while wearing Grundy County jerseys. The same two players were then allowed to ride a team bus to a meet and greet with former University of Tennessee quarterback Josh Dobbs at Tullahoma High School.

The TSSAA waived the $1000 fine since the Grundy County administration self reported the violation and placed their own football program on probation.

The following penalties were placed on the program by the Grundy County administration per the letter sent to Grundy County principal Charlie Westmoreland from TSSAA Executive Director Bernard Childress.

*Year one probation (August 30, 2019 through August 29, 2020)
*No more than one spring scrimmage (home only)
*No more than one fall scrimmage (home only)
*Minimum of two coaches present at all times during conditioning and weightlifting.
*Field house schedule will be completed by the head coach and approved by the school administration
*Field house policy developed by the head coach and clearly posted and approved by administration

*Year two probation (August 30, 2020 through August 29, 2021)
*Minimum of two coaches present at all times during conditioning and weightlifting.
*Field house schedule will be completed by the head coach and approved by the school administration
*Field house policy developed by the head coach and clearly posted and approved by administration

Also additional actions taken by the Grundy County administration were:

*Cameras will be placed inside the field house to view the main weight room and the coach’s office as a safety precaution for all players and coaches

*Coach Hayworth and Coach Meeks will understand that using any type of electronic device to contact athletes in surrounding counties, trying to encourage athletes to participate in Grundy County sports is a direct violation of the TSSAA recruiting rule.

*Any violation during the period of disciplinary action will result in immediate termination.
