The Friday Five- Week 5

The Friday Five- Week 5

By Chad Withrow:

There is a buzz in the air this morning as we are now mere hours away from kick-off across the state. Speaking of the state, Tennessee has steadily improved its level of high school football year after year since I started broadcasting high school football in 2004. Nowhere has seen a bigger and faster uptick than the mid-state where the mix of a population explosion and better coaching and resources have made many players and programs across the region a must watch product every Friday night. My aim with this weekly column is to bring you a good mix of public and private, urban and rural, and big and small. I want to create the best possible cross section of big time match-ups in different classifications and corners of the mid-state. Now that’s not to say that I’m going to ignore the bigger, more obvious match-ups. I’m not. But I also won’t ignore the smaller programs that’s passion is equal to and sometimes outshines some of their bigger school counterparts.

It’s important for me to point out that I couldn’t do this column and no one on this site could bring you any of this coverage without sponsors that care about their communities and care about high school football. One of those businesses is Brentwood Hearing Center, You will see me write about them and hear (pun intended) me talk about them throughout the 2019 season. They are also the presenting sponsor of our first ever series of “Games of the Week” that heads to Ensworth tonight for their huge game against Baylor. With that, it’s on with the list. Here are my Top 5 Games of the Week in the mid-state for Week 5. It’s a Region Week so there are a number of games that will go a long way in deciding championships and playoff seedings.

1) Baylor (4-0) @ Ensworth (4-0)

Division II-AAA-East features three remaining undefeated teams. These two squaring off at Ensworth tonight and a McCallie team that’s already won at Brentwood Academy. Needless to say this is a big one and it’s why we are headed to Ensworth tonight for out Brentwood Hearing Center Game of the Week.

2) Ravenwood (4-0) @ Brentwood (3-1)

It’s The Battle of the Woods tonight as a pair of teams that are unbeaten in Region 6-6A play to possibly determine the Region Champion. Although, 3-1 Independence will have something to say about it.

3) BGA (4-0) @ CPA (0-4)

Undefeated vs. Winless doesn’t sound overly appealing but CPA has yet to play a Region game and their 4 losses are all to powerhouses. This is a rivalry game worth keeping an eye on at the Home of the Lions tonight.

4) Springfield (3-1) @ White House (3-0)

Region 5-4A is shaping up to be one of the most entertaining in the mid-state with Portland, Creek Wood, Montgomery Central, White House-Heritage, Springfield, and White House all having a realistic shot at the #1 seed coming out of this Region. The winner of this game tonight gets an early edge in that race.

5) Wilson Central (4-0) @ Mt. Juliet (1-2)

Mt. Juliet isn’t accustomed to losing regular season games in recent years but they’ve already dropped two in the early stages of this season. But the Golden Bears are 1-0 in Region 4-6A. The early surprise in the Region are the 4-0 Wilson Central Wildcats who have outscored their opponents 139-48 this season. Central can prove they are no fluke tonight while Mt. Juliet can make the statement that they are going nowhere in this Region race.
