Two weeks after Brent Johns surprised the Chapel Hill community by resigning as head football coach at Forrest, the Rockets have a new leader.

Eli Stephenson who has served as the defensive coordinator at Forrest the last two seasons has been promoted to lead the Rockets in 2018.

“We are happy to announce that Eli Stephenson has been named the new head coach at Forrest School,” new Forrest principal Angie Phifer said.

Stephenson, 30, replaces Johns who resigned two weeks ago to spend more time with his family.

“I’m very thankful and humbled to become the head coach at such a great place like Forrest and I’m excited about the opportunity that has been given to me,” Stephenson said.

Before coming to Forrest, Stephenson began his coaching career coaching three years at Red Boiling Springs (2013-15).

Under Johns, the Rockets were 15-9 in those two seasons and despite only a 4-7 year in 2017 made the playoffs.

The Rockets had their most successful season ever in 2016 as they finished the year 11-2 and made the Class 2A Quarterfinals for the first time in school history.

The following three schools are looking for a new head coach: Humboldt, Whites Creek and White House Heritage
