Anderson County vs. Powell
When: August 30th, 7:30 PM
Where: At Powell
High school football is now in a full swing, as teams around the state head into the second week of games. As I mentioned in last week’s game of the week that starred Hardin Valley and Oak Ridge, it was going to be a defensive battle, and it was just that, as Hardin Valley came out on top 13-6.
As Donovan Stewart pointed out in his picks for this weeks’ games, a number of upsets happened last week, which plays a factor in the game I selected for the game of the week this week. This week’s game of the week features Anderson County and Powell.
Powell Panthers (1-0, 0-0)
Powell heads into this game fresh off of a huge win against Greeneville. The Greeneville Green Devils were riding into this game coming off of an undefeated 15-0 season and a state championship. The Panthers ended their 30-game winning streak last Thursday night, as they upset the Green Devils 19-17, which featured a long delay due to storms in the area.
Powell snuck out an opening week win after a strong third quarter, as they scored 13 points to help build their lead. Greeneville added on a touchdown in the fourth quarter, but the Panther’s defense stood strong and got a huge stop to end their long win streak.
Eli Owens had a tremendous game last week, both offensively and defensively. He picked up a number of huge stops on the defensive side of the ball, while also adding on two rushing touchdowns to help solidify their lead. Look for him to have a big impact on this game as well.
Anderson County Mavericks (1-0, 0-0)
Anderson County heads into this week with their heads high after an opening week shutout against Clinton. The Mavericks defense was all over the field, as they shutout Clinton on their way to the 24-0 victory. Not only was their defense spectacular all night long, but they were also able to get some scores thanks to special teams. In the third quarter alone, the Mavericks had two special teams touchdowns, one on a blocked punt that was returned for a touchdown and another on a punt return for a touchdown
Rush Lindsay had a great game for the Mavericks last Friday night after he finished with 10 total tackles, including three TFLs and a sack to give him a great opening week. He will have a big impact on this week’s game for the Mavericks as well.
Predicting the game
I come into this second week of the season fresh off of a correct prediction in Week Zero, so I’m looking to continue to stay on this streak after struggling last season.
Both teams here are coming off of opening week victories and will look to get off to a 2-0 start. This game will once again feature some good defenses, especially since the Mavericks are coming in off of a shutout, and the Panthers are coming in after holding the two-time state champions to just 17 points.
Look for the play of Powell’s Owens to make a difference in this week’s game again. He will play a huge factor in this game, and will likely meet Anderson County’s Lindsay in a hole.
Powell should win this one, but it’ll be a close hard-fought game.
