Former McNairy Central football player Wes Johnson has been named the new head football coach at Dresden according to Dresden principal Chuck West.
“We have hired Wes Johnson as our new football coach,” West said.
He replaces Levi Estes who resigned after two years of leading the Dresden program to become the offensive coordinator at Lassiter (GA) high school.
In his two seasons of leading the program, Estes compiled a record of 15-7 and led the Lions to Class 1A playoffs as they finished 10-2 in 2017.
The Lions missed the playoffs in 2018 as they finished 5-5 on the year but they head into the 2019 season on a two game winning streak.
Johnson is a 2010 McNairy Central graduate and started his coaching career at UT Martin as a defensive assistant in 2012 before moving to East Tennessee to be an assistant at Morristown East in 2014.
He then moved to Southern Methodist University (SMU) to be a defensive graduate assistant for three years (2016-18).
Johnson, 27, then accepted a job as a defensive quality control coach at Arkansas in the spring of 2019 before coming to Dresden.
“I’m really excited to take over a program with such a great tradition like Dresden has,” Johnson said. “ The school is very big in the community and I’m am excited to get everyone involved.”
RePublic is currently the only school still looking for a head coach statewide.
