DeLynn Cline needed to get something off his plate.
Cline was juggling several different jobs as he is the Claiborne County Coordinated School Health Director, the county Athletic Director and the head football coach at Cumberland Gap.
Now Cline will just focus on his jobs at the Claiborne County Central Office as he has resigned as the Cumberland Gap head football coach.
“Yes, I have resigned as head football coach, I moved over to the central office last year and I’m the Coordinated Health Director and county AD and I felt it was just time to let football go,” Cline said.
The Panthers finished 4-7 this season as they made the Class 2A playoffs losing to South Greene in the first round.
Cline had two different head coaching tenures at Cumberland Gap serving as head coach from 2003 to 2006 and again from 2017-2020 going 43-44 overall in those two tenures leading the Panthers to six playoff appearances (2003, 2005, 2006, 2017, 2019 and 2020).
Cline, a Powell Valley graduate also was the head coach previously at Powell Valley for a decade (1993-2002) before the school consolidated with Forge Ridge to make Cumberland Gap in 2003.
While at Powell Valley, Cline posted a 54-53 record and led the school to six playoff appearances (1993, 1995, 1996, 1999, 2001 and 2002).
His overall coaching record at both schools is 97-97.
The next head coach for Cumberland Gap will usher the Panthers into a new region as they will be in the four-team region 1-2A with Hampton, Happy Valley and South Greene.
Currently 10 schools in Arlington, Blackman, Cherokee, Cumberland Gap, FACS, Franklin, Lakeway Christian, MTCS, Northwest and Tyner are looking for a head coach.
