Last July, the Cheatham County football program scrambled after then head coach Eric Hatley resigned to take an assistant coaching job at Franklin.
Because it was so late in the offseason, the Cheatham County administration named Dwayne Daniel as the interim head coach for the 2019 season with the intent to open the job up again after the season.
Cheatham County finished the year at 2-8 and the job had been posted according Cheatham County principal Stephen Wenning.
“When we named Coach Daniel as head coach we told him that it was interim and that after the season we would open it up for all applicants and that includes him,” Wenning said.
“We are looking for the best fit for Cheatham county as a coach and as a teacher and Dwayne has done a good job with our young men and I have no complaints whatsoever. Ultimately, since we had a late resignation in the summer, we do not feel we had the opportunity to do a complete coaching search to insure that we have the best candidates and coach possible for our students.”
Daniel intends to apply for the job on a full time basis as the Cubs will head into the 2020 season on a one game winning streak as they beat Harpeth in the season finale and will head into the offseason with momentum.
“Yes, I am definitely applying for the job and I’ve still been working on off season stuff as if I was going to be at Cheatham next season,” Daniel said.
Daniel served as his own defensive coordinator this year and has been on Cheatham County staff and coaching defensive backs and wide receivers since 2016.
He started his coaching career in 2006 as he spent seven years at Dickson Middle school coaching defensive backs and wide receivers.
Daniel then moved over to Creek Wood high school and was an assistant there for three years (2013-15) before coming to Cheatham County.
Currently there are 11 schools looking for a head coach they are: Camden, Cheatham County, Clinton, Goodpasture, Lincoln County, Loretto, Milan, Overton, Red Boiling Springs, Siegel and Station Camp
