Katarii Donald was fired in January as the head football coach at Kingsbury.
Now five months later, Donald has landed on his feet and is the new head football coach at Memphis East as he replaces Marcus Wimberly who took the Cordova job back in January.
Shelby County Interscholastic Athletic Association (SCIAA) Athletic Specialist Marcus Taylor confirmed the hire.
“I am truly honored to be in this position. East has a rich tradition and tremendous support, I look forward to continuing that tradition and bringing more success for student-athletes. I’m thankful for this great opportunity to work at a school committed to the success of our students by administrators and community, on and off the field,” Donald said.
The East job will be Donald’s third head coaching job after three seasons at Kingsbury (2015-17) and one season (2014) at Memphis Academy of Health Sciences.
East was 5-6 in 2017 and was knocked out of the Class 4A playoffs in the first round by Dyersburg after winning the 4A state title in 2016.
Under Wimberly for 12 seasons, the Mustangs were successful making the playoffs nine times (five times in 4A: 2006, 2008, 2015, 2016 and 2017 and four times in 5A: 2010, 2011, 2013 and 2014) as they posted an 81-57 record during his tenure.
The following four schools are looking for a new head coach: Copper Basin, RePublic, St. George’s and Whites Creek
