Matt Lowe returning to alma mater Powell for second tenure as football Coach

Matt Lowe had a successful tenure as head football coach at Powell for six years (2006-11) leading the Panthers to six playoff appearances and a runner up appearance in 2011.

Now Lowe, a 1995 Powell graduate is ready for a second go around at Powell as he has been hired as the new head football coach.

He replaced Rodney Ellison who resigned last week after three seasons as head coach where they posted a 8-23 during his tenure as the Panthers improved from 1-9 in 2016 to 5-5 last season.

“We are excited to welcome home Matt Lowe as our new head football coach. We are confident that Coach Lowe will use his relentless work ethic and coaching ability to bring pride to all of the Panther Nation. Coach Lowe is a great teacher who has proven to lead young people to achieve more than ever thought possible. Furthermore, Matt is one of us. As a graduate of Powell High School, Matt knows what it means to be a Powell Panther and we look forward to him instilling those values in our young men,” Powell principal Chad Smith said.

Ellison has since been hired as an assistant coach at defending
Class 5A state champion Knoxville Catholic where he will coach wide receivers and safeties.

Lowe spent the last five seasons at The Kings Academy where the Lions were 30-25 and have made three consecutive Division II-A playoff appearances (only playoff appearances in school history) and are coming off their best season in school history as they finished 8-4 and won their first playoff game beating Clarksville Academy 62-14 before losing to Nashville Christian in the second round.

In his first tenure at Powell, the Panthers were 49-23 and made three Class 4A playoff appearances (2006-08) and three 5A appearances (2009-11) which culminated in Powell’s second runner up trophy (finished second in Class AA in 1991).

Lowe’s overall coaching record is 79-48 and his teams have made the playoff nine times.

The following 12 schools are looking for a new head coach: Bolton, Copper Basin, DCA, Dobyns Bennett, Houston, Knoxville Halls, Memphis East, RePublic, Richland, Stone Memorial, The Kings Academy and Westwood
