Hayden Chandley Hired As New David Crockett Coach

After a turbulent 2017 season that saw former coach Gerald Sensabaugh get suspended in October, David Crockett make the Class 5A playoffs under two interim coaches and Sensabaugh then got fired last month, the school is looking toward the future with a coach with local ties.

Hayden Chandley, a 2011 Daniel Boone graduate who served as the running back and tight ends coach at Bluefield College in 2017 has been hired to take over the Pioneer program.

“We are excited to announce the appointment of Coach Chandley as our Head Football coach at DCHS. Besides being an excellent football coach, Hayden is an outstanding young man and will be a great role model for our students and our athletes,” Washington County Director of Schools Kimber Halliburton said via a press release.

Chandley, 25 will be the youngest head coach in the state and has only three years of coaching (both in college) as he started his career at his alma mater UVA Wise in 2015 where he coached linebackers for two seasons before coaching at Bluefield in 2017.

“We want our faculty, our students and our community to know that we have selected the best possible candidate for our school and our football players. Hayden brings a lot of energy and enthusiasm to our program which the students and faculty will love. We are excited to know we have found a great coach for our football team,” David Crockett principal Peggy Wright said.

He played linebacker at UVA Wise and received a sports management degree in 2015.

“We have three overarching goals for this football team,” Chandley said. “We will do things the right way and will conduct ourselves in a respectable manner on and off the field, we will pride ourselves on playing fast, physical, and being extremely disciplined and we will work extremely hard and we will respect our opponent.”

Chandley also announced that former David Crockett quarterback Ryan Burger will be joining the staff as well.

The following 11 schools are looking for a new head coach: Bolton, Copper Basin, DCA, Dobyns Bennett, Houston, Knoxville Halls, Memphis East, Powell, RePublic, Richland and Westwood
