After having success as an assistant coach, Jonas Rodriguez is primed and ready to run his own football program.
The former Ensworth defensive coordinator has been announced as the new head football coach at Evangelical Christian School.
“My family and I are tremendously excited to join the ECS community. The head football coach position at ECS provides a unique opportunity to disciple, mentor, and coach at a tradition-rich institution. I am thankful for the opportunities afforded to me at Ensworth which prepared me to embark on this new journey with my family and I am equally thankful for the welcoming community at ECS led by Head of School Dan Peterson, the ECS Board of Trust, and head football coach search committee,” Rodriguez said.
He replaces Alan Durham who served as the Eagles head coach the last two seasons as ECS were 5-16 during his tenure.
“Coach Rodriguez comes from a background of championships as a player and a coach and knows what it takes to reach the top. His passion and love for the game is contagious and will have an effect on our players. He has great knowledge and insight into the game of football and will challenge our players to excel and compete at the highest,” ECS Athletic Director Tommy Danner said.
ECS is coming off a 2-8 season in which they missed the playoffs for the first time since 2008 and the Eagles aren’t used to not make the playoffs as they have won four state titles (1983 in Class A, 1999 and 2000 in Division II-AA and 2005 in Division II-AA) in the school’s history.
Rodriguez served as the Defensive coordinator for Ensworth the last six seasons and helped the Tigers win three consecutive Division II-AA state titles in 2011, 2012 and 2013.
Before coming at Ensworth, Rodriguez worked at his Alma mater MBA for seven years (2005-10) after lettering four seasons playing football at Yale (2000-03).
While a student athlete at MBA, Rodriguez was a three sport starts for the Big Red and was a part of six state title teams (1998 and 1999 in football), (1998 and 1999 in track and field) and (1998 and 2000) in basketball.
There are currently 11 programs looking for a head coach they are: Northpoint Christian, Ravenwood, Hillsboro, Whitwell, Clarksville Northeast, Rossview, Creek wood, Ripley, Grace Christian Academy, Brainerd and Loretto.
