Streak Going Into 2017– Two game winning streak

Outlook:

Despite a 3-7 record in coach Randy Muphree’s first year at Dickson County, the Cougars head into the 2017 season on a high note winning their last two contests.

Wins over Clarksville and West Creek to end the 2016 season has the Cougars going into the 2017 season with some much needed momentum.

Five starters return to each side of the ball including three returnees on the offensive line. Seniors Dean Steely (20 pancake blocks) and Clifton Cummings along with junior Noah Chapdelaine (11 pancake blocks) provide experience to a position group that any coach will tell you is always in need of just that.

Running backs Demontez Coleman and Darian Burns both return to get carries in the backfield and both players will have a say in the Cougar passing game as well. Coleman (319 rushing yards, four touchdowns, 30 catches for 456 yards, six touchdowns) is a threat in the run and catch game while Burns (Junior) had 242 yards rushing and four touchdowns as well as catching 22 passes for 211 yards and one more touchdown. Both players will be counted on to do a little bit of everything for the Cougars in 2017.

Senior Cole Martin will take over at quarterback after watching the head coach’s son Jacob Murphree pass for 3,202 yards and 28 touchdowns last year. Martin will also play in the secondary on defense as he made 34 tackles last year.

Two leading tacklers return to the secondary. Conner Stewart returns at safety where he made 81 tackles last year, while cornerback Tristan Corlew made 52 tackles. Both players are reliable members of the back end of the Cougar defense.

Linebacker is one of the more experienced position groups as three of four starters return in 2017. Juniors Darian Burns (47 tackles, 8 for loss), and Dylan Dooley (44 tackles) as well as sophomore Micah Fann (38 tackles) will continue making plays for the Cougars.

Steely will be the lone returning starter on the defensive line as he made 24 tackles last year. The Cougars will need reliable play from him and the rest of their roster if they are going to better their win/loss record. Dickson County will be moving up from 5A to 6A in 2017.
