Danny Nowell Hired For Second Tenure At Alma Mater Humboldt

Danny Nowell is coming home again.

Nowell, 70 is coming back for his second stint as head coach of the Vikings as he was named head coach.

He was the head coach at Humboldt for six years (1982-87) and coached at Humboldt for 17 total years (1970-87) before heading to Middle Tennessee and coaching at Franklin.

“We are very excited to have Coach Nowell leading the football program for Humboldt City Schools,” Humboldt City Director of Schools Versie R. Hamlett said. “He has come full circle returning to Humboldt and is ready to build a premier program.”

During his first tenure at Humboldt, Nowell led the Vikings to back to back Class AA playoff appearances in 1986 and 1987.

Nowell was an assistant coach at Humboldt during the Vikings 1979 Class AA state champion team and graduated and played football at Humboldt.


The Vikings head into the 2018 season with a 11 game losing streak after going 0-10 under two different head coaches (Junior Reid and Joseph Shepard) in 2017.

He left Humboldt to become the head coach at Franklin in 1990 and was the head coach of the Rebels for seven seasons leading Franklin to four playoff appearances (1990, 1992, 1994 and 1995).

He stayed at Franklin as an assistant and retired after 35 years in coaching in 2008, only to come out of retirement to coach at Hattiesburg (MS) high school.

The following 15 schools are looking for a new head coach: Cannon County, Chattanooga Central, Copper Basin, David Crockett, DCA, Dobyns Bennett, Houston, KIPP Academy, Kingsbury, Memphis East, Pickett County, Richland, Sequatchie County, Sullivan North and Westwood
